Fantastic idea.

I will implement this in my web application then.

Every developer cracking their head to design a user-friendly search interface. I would say this is a simple design which do everything we just few simple steps.

Good work. Keep it up!

Does anyone know what software they are using to power their search?

It looks like the reason for the tree-type fly out on Type and Publication Date is because you are no longer filtering on just Publication Date, it's one level down Publication Date> Over 1 Year> 2005. As opposed to the Author where you are just showing more Authors.

I see, there's some hierarchy there. You can select "Over 1 Year" or select a specific year. My discomfort was more to do with the "[+] Show More" control. That could have been a flyout menu as well, without providing a clickable link on the "More..." text. Does it feel awkward to have one menu appear on hover, while the other appears on click? It did to me.
