Pattern Tap, an interface and visual design gallery, provides a UI for filtering using tags. Best case scenario would get rid of the filter button and also updates the set of available tags to indicate those that can be combined with the current selection (e.g. dim or hide tags that can't be combined with my selection "black AND white" AND simiple." Often times in interfaces that provide filtering based on all available tags or index terms, if the filtering UI doesn't update to reflect those terms that may successfully combined, the user is led down a path to an empty set. del.icio.us is one example I can point to that prevents this error. I really like the execution of this interface on Pattern Tap, but would love it if that added logic were there.

Great to see you feature our work! As per your comments, about the filter button, I can see your point. There will be live filtering of the number in the pagination bar as the user chooses to add or remove a tag. Live filtering a huge database of images is unrealistic and would be more of a burden that a usefulness.
Regarding incompatible tags:
Because the tags don't operate with incompatibilities, this won't be an issue.
Great work here at Konigi!

Matthew, I'm looking forward to seeing your site. Funny thing is I had sketched a very similar type of UI to work on tag filtering as well on this site. Great minds. :) Last year, I actually worked on the design of a search results filter that did multi-facet combinations, which is why I brought the boolean properties up--I wanted to see what the rules would be that drove what tags are visible.
I agree that live filtering is a huge database hit. Wonder if those could be cached though?
Look forward to your launch! You're really building up expectation with your Friday notices.

Interesting thoughts. Glad you're keeping tabs on the Tap! I absolutely can't wait to break this open. It would be good to collaborate about ideas in the future. Have a pleasant weekend!
