This is interesting. This season, Berliner Technische Kunsthochschule Hochschule für Gestaltung (FH) is putting on a series of lectures in Berlin centering on topics related to the drop shadow and 3D visual elements in graphic design.
The Drop Shadow Talks reply to current developments on the visually enriched layer for machine interaction. In the shades of evening lectures the Drop Shadow Talks will present art and projects influenced and inspired by the baroque graphical user interface.
The drop shadow around the screenshot is nice ;)
I say put the Drop Shadow and the Bevel in a ring and let them both fight it out to the death.
Sometimes I get so tired of drop shadows and color gradiants... If it has a drop shadow, people without any sense suddenly qualify it as good, somehow more "evolved," well conceived design. They should be used sparingly, and their use should be justified. But that's just me.
@Sarah: With one of the talk titles being "Fuck 3D," I'm guessing some of the discussion will be focused on appropriateness and justifying use.
